Retreat into nature

Set over four hectares of land, Make’s luxury wellness resort Serensia Woods is one of the largest developments on Hengqin Island in Zhuhai. Just 200m west across the water from Macau, Hengqin is undergoing rapid development, and is set to be China’s newest leisure and wellness destination.

Serensia Woods, which comprises a hotel, spa, treatment centre, villas and serviced apartments, will be at the forefront of this offering. The architecture draws on the concept of an oasis of nature, with the buildings arranged in and around a lush garden, including a crescent-shaped spa building which sits at the heart of the site and embraces the central swimming pool. The buildings range in size from the single-storey spa ‘huts’ to the 14-storey hotel and are clad in varying combinations of metal, terracotta, timber and stone.

The interiors, which Make also designed, are all tailored to their specific building but are united by design features that include views onto nature, greenery and natural materials, joinery insertions, curved elements, privacy, and comfort. These bring in aspects of the external architecture – such as the gridded facades, cladding materials and curvature of the spa building – and connect the user back to the natural landscape outside.

Landscape, nature and greenery were very key factors, and we wanted to make sure that the architecture married with the nature.
