The vision for Newcastle Helix is an ambitious one: an elite teaching facility, business hub and sustainable technology research centre all rolled into one, housed in a vibrant urban quarter with strong ties to local neighbourhoods and businesses. A living laboratory in the heart of Newcastle – but no ivory tower.
We’ve designed a fully integrated campus that makes the most of the scheme’s central location. Commercial, retail and leisure spaces sit alongside flats, houses, and world-class research and education facilities – all carefully interwoven with new pedestrian links. Some 30% of the area will be used by the University of Newcastle, whose sustainable science departments are located near various business partners – perfectly poised to cement ties and maximise investment coming into the site.
The development sets a benchmark for sustainable design. Solar panels, water heating systems and a local energy centre make it partly self-sufficient, while a greenhouse produces food and roof gardens encourage biodiversity. And the buildings – whether commercial, residential, or educational – rarely exceed 15m in depth, which means they can be ventilated naturally.
Our forward-thinking design, which has been handed over for the delivery phase of the project, will help turn Newcastle into a beacon of scientific endeavour. In its reimagining of the link between business and academia, the scheme is a pioneering development – more than fitting for the pioneers who’ll live, work and exchange ideas within it.
Newcastle Helix represents one of the most significant economic development opportunities for a generation.
