An anchor for Arena Central

3 Arena Central

  • Service Architecture
  • Sector Workplace
  • Area 32,700m²/351,800ft²
  • Client Arena Central Developments, Galliford Try

This forthcoming office building is Make’s third for Arena Central, a prestigious new business quarter in the heart of Birmingham set to host more than 1,000,000ft² of office space. With its distinctive cladding and extensive public realm, the 14-storey building will be a focal point within Make’s wider Arena Central masterplan – a new destination at the heart of this city-centre development.

Our brief was to provide high-quality, future-focused office space, which we’re delivering with large floorplates set around an offset core – a flexible configuration that allows for a range of tenancies. There’s a dedicated basement car park with secure parking, cycle racks, lockers and shower facilities, and the building as a whole has been designed to meet BREEAM ‘Excellent’ standards.

Externally, our design includes two significant new public spaces: Bank Court, a formal public square, and The Terrace, an informal landscaped space linked to a path running the length of the site. The building – clad in a lively three-dimensional pattern that will be visible from both Centenary Square and the Library of Birmingham – also features a double-height colonnade running along its northern face, reinforcing a new pedestrian link to the canal.

Once built, 3 Arena Central will be an anchor for the development at large, helping fulfil its civic potential and deliver the commercial space Birmingham needs to continue its regeneration. The UK Government has already committed to a 25-year lease of the full building – the city’s largest pre-let in a decade.
