Make is redeveloping the Fine Watches and Fine Jewellery department at Harrods's flagship Knightsbridge store to create 9,500m² of luxury retail space – the largest project the retailer has taken undertaken in a century. Set over the ground, lower ground floor and sub-basement, the scheme will improve visibility across the store, evoke lost Edwardian architectural features, and provide an exclusive shopping experience that reinforces Harrods’s reputation as Europe’s premier luxury retailer.

A key feature of our redevelopment is the introduction of double-height halls that recall the Grade II*-listed building’s original Edwardian grid. Designed as a series of interconnecting galleries with a central circulation zone, the new halls provide space for individual brand boutiques. A pair of curved escalators are located at each of the department’s two entrances – the first circular escalators in the UK and a nod to the historic sweeping staircases that grace the store.

We’re also maintaining heritage ceilings, introducing routes to adjacent halls, and redesigning two historic doors to provide a striking new entrance on Hans Road. The entrance works involve the careful reinstatement of Edwardian Baroque curved windows, decorative mosaic flooring, high-level tracing and mullion detailing. Inside, our material palette includes warm timber, cream marble, rich grey stonework, champagne metal finishes and white plasterwork – tones that reflect the quality and craft of the products on display.

We’ve worked closely with Historic England to ensure our scheme celebrates the store’s heritage features while upgrading them for contemporary use. With its emphasis on legacy and customer experience, the new department will be a fitting showcase for the prestigious brands it showcases.
