With 1 Centenary Square, we’re constructing and tailoring 17,500m² of Grade A office space for HSBC UK. The building – set to become the UK head office of HSBC’s personal and business banking division – is the second in our Arena Central regeneration masterplan to receive planning consent. It faces one of Birmingham’s highest-profile public spaces and is poised to significantly boost the city’s economy.
Our design comprises three basement levels, plus a ground floor and ten upper floors. The form is broken down into three slender stepped blocks oriented to maximise views of the soon-to-be-refurbished Centenary Square. The facade complements the area’s architecture – which includes three handsome listed buildings and the iconic new Library of Birmingham – with a woven cladding pattern colour-matched to the Portland stone of nearby structures. This cladding subtly transforms as it wraps around the building: a calm, elegant facade is presented to Centenary Square, while a softer, rippling elevation faces Arena Central.
Once it’s completed in 2018, 1 Centenary Square will advance Birmingham’s economic prospects, as well as its green credentials – it’s the first building in the city to be constructed to LEED Gold accreditation.
This is an exceedingly significant addition to Birmingham’s commercial landscape, supporting the city’s growing reputation as a leading centre for professional and financial services occupiers.
