The hand does not draw superfluous things

刊登 03.12.2019
Manuelle Gautrand

Drawing is fundamental in the conception process: it is a way to allow my mind developing ideas in a very intuitive and quick movement. And it is important to draw without any “a priori”: most part of the time, new ideas are emerging this way. It is also a good departure point to synthetize the development of a project, to keep or come back to the essence of it, and its priorities. The hand does not draw superfluous things.

Here my drawing expresses our Housing project in Amsterdam-Hoofddorp: 9 housings around a beautiful courtyard. Each housing includes around 40 apartments and tells a specific story for its inhabitants, developing a distinctive atmosphere both in the public areas than in the private one.

This post forms part of our series on The Architecture Drawing Prize: an open drawing competition curated by Make, WAF and Sir John Soane’s Museum to highlight the importance of drawing in architecture. The winning and shortlisted entries for 2019 have been announced and will be on display at Sir John Soane’s Museum from the 15th January 2020.
