Make’s in-house Revit team designs MassMaker tool to speed up residential studies

Our in-house Revit team have turned their innovation skills up a notch to design a new plug-in tool – MassMaker for Revit which should significantly accelerate the design of residential feasibility studies.

Working in collaboration with Matterlab, the software innovation firm, the generative design tool analyses an option for a building mass and then automatically suggests an indicative unit mix for the building, based upon a client’s objectives, providing a combination of studio, one-, two- and three-bed apartments that will intuitively fit.

We have been working on the prototype according to our own in-house residential design standards for a variety of apartment sizes, amenity and circulation spaces.

Kent Burns, Project Technology Manager at Make Architects said: “By integrating the tool into Revit, architects no longer need to switch between interfaces or file formats and we can produce more iterations and examine the options more efficiently. It’s not residential design, rather it’s about space analysis. By having an insight into what our architects need and where the gaps were in the existing software, we were able to design something that specifically filled the gap.”

This first version takes the building mass and will generate the unit mix and diagrammatic floor layouts which can be adjusted to provide multiple options, which gives architects faster feedback into whether a design meets the client brief. Future versions will cater for more intricate or unusual shaped buildings.

Matterlab has now launched the product on the Revit App Store. Regular post-launch updates will add in new functionality and options for different types of apartment block and other building types.

Mark Thorley, Co-Founder of Matterlab: “Collaborating with Make on this project was an absolute pleasure. They truly understand how to approach residential design, providing great spaces for their clients. Their forward-thinking approach and expertise provided great insight throughout the engagement.”
