Capella Sydney wins AHEAD’s Global Hotel of the Year

After winning top honours at the AHEAD Asia Awards in three categories – Best Conversion, Lobby and Hotel of the Year – Capella Sydney has now surpassed all fellow regional winners to achieve top spot at the AHEAD Global Awards, winning the Ultimate Accolade – Global Hotel of the Year.

AHEAD Global Awards are the leading international hospitality design awards, celebrating the accomplishments of those shaping the hotel experience and design industry in all corners of the globe. Following regional awards for Asia, the Americas, the Middle East and Africa, and Europe, the annual AHEAD 100 list of the best new hotels in the world was revealed. From this list, the top 20 hotels were then assessed by a global panel to decide the 10 best projects and the winner of the ‘Ultimate Accolade’.

The panel of judges, which includes designers, hoteliers and industry commentators, described Capella Sydney as “sympathetic, understated and elegant,” particularly praising the “expert transitions between new and existing architecture” resulting in “a reimagined sequence of spaces that delight”.

With architecture by Make and interiors by BAR Studio, Capella Sydney transforms a heritage-listed former government building in Sydney into a world-class luxury hotel, setting a new standard for hospitality in the region. Our design honours the building’s heritage while bringing it firmly into the 21st century, with 192 grandly proportioned guestrooms, a spa and wellness centre, and a variety of new publicly accessible restaurant and bar venues, plus event spaces on the ground floor. Designed for Pontiac Land Group, the hotel is the first Australian property for the Capella Hotel Group.

Michelle Evans, lead designer, says: “Capella Sydney is a once-in-a-generation project that we’re incredibly privileged to have worked on. It’s an honour to have it celebrated by AHEAD, and we’re proud to have been part of an incredible and collaborative project team.”
