The first stage of Make Architects’ major mixed use transport hub has opened in Sydney
Wynyard Place – a A$1 billion mixed-used precinct project we’ve designed for Brookfield – has reached its first milestone with the opening of the first section of the George Street entrance, a new public concourse link to Wynyard Station.
When complete in 2020, the George Street entrance will transform what was once a tunnel to Wynyard Station into an open-air, daylight-filled grand transit hall, providing a new pedestrian connection to the transport hub. This ‘urban room’ will be 13.5m high and form a new nodal point for Sydney, linking George Street to Wynyard Station, Carrington Street and Wynyard Park for the first time, creating a new, truly diverse mixed use precinct.
On completion, this new precinct will provide 7,000m2 of world-class retail – from high-end flagship retail to convenience amenities – and a new 27-storey, state-of-the-art, PCA premium grade commercial tower. Over half of this new tower at 10 Carrington Street is already leased to landmark tenants National Australia Bank and Allianz. Two neighbouring heritage listed landmarks – Shell House and 285 George Street – are also being sympathetically restored as part of the project and will be converted into office buildings.
Simon Lincoln at Make Architects said: “We are extremely excited to see the new phase of Wynyard start to emerge from behind the hoarding. We look forward to gradual unveiling over the next two years.”
Construction is expected to complete in 2020.
Make is working with Brookfield, Architectus, Multiplex, Roberts Bird Group and Arup.
