New backdrop to the Monument as 350th commemoration events get underway

Inspired by the flames that crown the Monument to the Great Fire of London, a new office building, covered with twisting, shimmering, flame-like metal fins has been unveiled in Monument Yard providing a stunning backdrop to the Monument itself.

Bounded by Pudding Lane where the Great Fire started 350 years ago, the building has been unveiled in time for the commemorative events that are planned over the next few days to mark the milestone anniversary.

Designed by Make on behalf of Skanska, The Monument Building acts as a contemporary new backdrop to the famous historic landmark and has replaced three outdated commercial buildings with a nine-storey Grade A office block.

The southern elevation, facing the Monument, provides the main entrance to the building and has a full height curtain of vertically-suspended, twisted metal ribbons which act as a spectacular setting to the Monument, as well as providing 23% solar shading to the south facade.

The Monument was designed by Sir Christopher Wren and Robert Hooke to commemorate the Great Fire of 1666.
