Great Architectural Bake-Off 2017

For this year’s Great Architectural Bake-Off, part of the London Festival of Architecture, Make designed a three-tiered cake based on London Wall Place, our new office and public realm scheme in the City.

Building on the festival theme of ‘Memory’, the bake-off team used each tier to depict a key milestone in the history of the site, which contains some significant historical remains, including a section of the London Wall and remnants of a 12th-century priory church.

There’s a Roman layer with a sugar mould of the wall in full flourish, a medieval layer with a marzipan model of St Alphage’s Church, and a present-day layer featuring fragments of these structures as well as a replica of Make’s new development cast in chocolate.

The cake flavours even (loosely) tie in: zesty lemon and spelt for Roman Britain, sweet spiced carrot for the Middle Ages, and sleek, glossy chocolate for today.
